Day 2

After a very bumpy ride and quick visit to the Bassa Town bank Mrs Jasper and Mrs Gillies started the day by teaching Class 2.1 Mrs Johnstons class. There were 80 7-8 years. They loved the story Handa's Surprise and using the dolls and the animal masks. After that Mrs Jasper and Mrs Gillies spent some time watching the teachers of Bassa Town Infants School. During lunchtime they walked around the school grounds which are extremely busy as local people come to sell their goods.

After school everybody in our party visited two local projects that are being funded by The Waterloo Partnership, Sow and Hoe and The Bakery. The ladies were working very hard in the incredible heat and young girls were busy doing their washing. The Bakery is still being built but what an exciting project for the women in the local community.

Mrs O'Brien and Mrs Bentley started the day at a Mother and Baby clinic. There were so many beautiful babies to hold. They have poor facilities though, so some very busy and stressed midwives. A very small boy told us a story that his grandma tells him and one of the young mothers sang us a Sierra Leonian lullaby!

The next stop was Waterloo Market. What an experience that was! Hustle, bustle, heat, fruit, fish, flies, heat, smiles, welcomes, heat and more heat! Mrs O'Brien now has a VERY red face, which is causing much laughter!

The last stop of the day was The Centre for Home Economics, which housed in a large room, the remains of a large book delivery. It was very strange to recognise signatures on boxes here in Sierra Leone! The books have arrived and have been gratefully received. They were being loaded on a van for delivery.
